Study Abroad
Special information for parents of study abroad students

Faculty and academic couselors in the Department of Agricultural Economics recognize that parents often take an active role in helping students make study abroad decisions. We strongly encourage parents to be involved in all stages of the study abroad process, from helping to choose the best time to go to identifying the best location and program.

As a parent, where do you begin? Importantly, you should make sure that you and your son or daughter are communicating clearly about what to expect from study abroad. Often, parents and students expect different things from a study abroad experience. That's why we encourage you and your son or daughter, as a first step, to click here and read a recent (and provocative) article about study abroad from the Education section of the New York Times. This article highlights some of the "myths" and "realities" behind study abroad, and provides a number of interesting points for discussion.

The university Study Abroad Office has developed a special site for parents...be sure to check it out.

And if at any time you have questions about study abroad, we encourage you to contact Dr. Gerald Shively, the designated Ag Econ study abroad conselor, either by email at shivelyg@purdue.edu , by phone at (765) 494-4218, or in person if you happen to be on the Purdue campus.
