News from Center for Food and Agricultural Business:

Center Debuts New Program: Agribusiness Finance for Non-Finance Managers
Agribusiness managers from across the country gathered December 13-16 at Purdue for the inaugural offering of Agribusiness Finance for Non-Finance Managers. Designed to build on participants’ existing managerial experience, the program exposed them to the process of running a business from a core of financial management.

Participants learned to evaluate financial statements, interpret balance sheets and analyze profitability. They also discovered how thinking like a CFO will help them in daily business interactions, and how financial management concepts apply to broader company goals, the industry and the marketplace.

“The course helped me understand the financial implications of every change in the operational and financial metrics of a company,” said one participant. “The high-level discussion helped facilitate learning, and the case study allowed me to work through numbers with a real company. This course will definitely help me make better business decisions.”

The next offering of Agribusiness Finance for Non-Finance Managers will be June 27-30, 2011, at Purdue. More information is available here.

Center Staff Attend ASTA Expo to Promote Programs Off Campus
Program Managers Betty Jones-Bliss and Aissa Good attended the American Seed Trade Association’s Corn & Sorghum and Soybean Seed Expo in Chicago in early December to promote the center’s annual ASTA Management Academy. The academy challenges seed industry professionals to think strategically and expand their knowledge base. The 2010 ASTA Management Academy attracted 53 participants from the United States, Mexico and Austria. The 2011 offering, which marks the 24th year of the academy, will be held February 2-March 4 at Purdue. More information is available here.

Center Highlights Programs at Conferences, Expos
Recruitment is underway for next year’s MS-MBA in Food and Agribusiness Management cohort. A few students are already registered for next year’s class. Approximately a dozen people are studying for the GMAT, and Program Manager Luanna DeMay hopes to have a full class of 25 before the program starts in August.

Photo of Luanna DemayAs part of her recruitment efforts, DeMay attended the ARA Annual Conference in Palm Springs, California. The theme of the booth at the conference was Give it Your Best Shot. The booth featured an interactive putting green, and participants could enter their business card for a chance to win an Odyssey putter. Jeff Garlich, a senior product manager at John Deere in Iowa, won the putter. Danielle Quirk, event manager, was also on hand to promote non-degree programs, including the center’s ARA Management Academy, to be held February 1-3, 2011, at Purdue. The center generated more than 150 leads from the conference.

DeMay will also be recruiting for the MS-MBA program at the College of Ag Fish Fry on Saturday, February 5, held in the Toyota Blue Ribbon Pavilion at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. She will also have a booth at the Indiana Agribusiness Conference and Expo. The exposition, which is sponsored by the Agribusiness Council of Indiana, will take place on January 26 and 27 at the Sheraton Indianapolis Hotel & Suites in Indianapolis.

News From the Indiana Council for Economic Education (ICEE):

ICEE received a grant from Chase through the Council for Economic Education (www.councilforeconed.org) to implement personal finance in middle and high school courses in two metropolitan Indianapolis school corporations – MSD Perry and MSD Pike Townships.  Jeff Sanson will be leading this initiative.  Jeff is currently finalizing an original online personal finance curriculum that is a part of a previous Chase grant.

ICEE, partnering with the Purdue College of Education and the Ball State Center for Economic Education, received a grant from the Indiana Commission for Higher Education to implement economics and personal finance into the curriculum of Randolph County schools.  Teachers will develop curriculum units in an intensive, two-week summer graduate credit course and then will implement the units during the 2011-12 school year.  BSU Center Director, DeVon Yoho, will spearhead the teacher training.

Congratulations to Shelly Surber, ICEE office administrator and “accountant,” for her promotion from Secretarial V to Administrative Professional Op Tech.
