Congratulations and Names in the News:
A retirement reception for Bob Taylor will be held on April 22, 2011 from 1 to 3 PM in the North Ballroom at the Memorial Union. At this reception there will be an announcement of the Robert Taylor Farm Management Excellence Fund as well as another honor for Bob. Some former students will speak as will as Dean Akridge and Provost Sands
The Snyder Lecture will be held April 15, 2011. Thomas M. Hoenig, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City is the guest speaker at the 1:30 lecture in Fowler Hall in Stewart Center. There will also be a panel discussion about commodity prices and volatility in the morning moderated by Mike Boehlje with panel members Ken McCorkle, Executive Vice President of Wells Fargo Bank, Wally Tyner, Phil Abbott, Chris Hurt, and Dr. Hoenig. The poster competition honors, outstanding thesis and dissertation awards, and APEX awards will round out the list of events.
On May 5, 2011, there will be a retirement reception and “hanging” for John Connor from 2 to 3:30 PM in Krannert 661. Further information about this event will be forthcoming.
Bruce Erickson participated in the second India Certified Crop Adviser (CCA) board and exam committee meetings in New Delhi, India March 22-24. At the meeting the 2011 India exam was finalized, the performance objectives for the program were revised, and the first India Certified Crop Advisers were awarded certificates. The India CCA program is a joint effort of the American Society of Agronomy, the International Rice Research Institute, and the India Society of Agribusiness Professionals. The trip also included a meeting with the board of the Fertilizer Institute of India, farm visits near Palwal, Haryana, and discussions about developing an India version of Fundamentals in Applied Agronomy, the online course that Erickson teaches.
Dr. Paavo Makinen, Deputy Head, European Commission Representation in Finland, Helsinki, Finland will be hosted by the Department as a 2011 Distinguished Agriculture Alumni.
Marsha Pritchard received recognition from Mortar Board for her dedication to students. Marshal was the recipient of the Rose Award.
LeeAnn Williams and Andy Oppy were co-presenters for a session at the Indiana Student Access and Success Conference. Their presentation focused on their advising model, freshman orientation course, sophomore orientation course and their management for success course, all aimed at student retention.
News from AGEC Graduate Students:
Patrick Ward was selected to receive a 2010-2011 Committee for the Education of Teaching Assistants (CETA) Teaching Award. Awards will be presented at the 13th Annual Celebration of Graduate Student Teaching Excellence on Tuesday, April 26, 2011.

AgEcon Student Presents at Statehouse: On March 22nd, 2011 approximately two dozen Purdue students presented their alternative energy research at the Indiana Statehouse in an event titled “Purdue Alternative Energy Day at the Statehouse.” Included in the event were solar-powered vehicles, a model of a wind turbine, a model of a solar house, and posters related to various forms of alternative energy. Jena Thompson’s alternative energy research addresses the use of corn stover as a biofuel.
Carson Reeling received one of two runner-up poster awards at the graduate student poster competition at the Purdue Climate Change Research Center Annual Meeting on March 4, 2011. There were 26 poster entries from graduate students representing 10 different academic departments (Ag and Biol Eng, AgEcon, Agronomy, Aero&Astro Eng, Biol Sci, Chem, Earth & Atmos Sci, Forestry & Nat Res, Hosp & Tourism Mgmt, Political Science) across the university. Carson’s poster, based on his M.S. thesis research, was entitled, “The Potential for Exploiting Cross-Media Environmental Effects from Conservation Practices in Maize-Based Cropping Systems.“
Fernando Malapi traveled to the 2011 Aquaculture America conference & exposition, organized by the U.S. Aquaculture Society, the National Aquaculture Association & the U.S. Aquaculture Suppliers Association during February 28-March 3th, 2011 in New Orleans, LA. Fernando's attendance to the event was sponsored by Cargill (U.S. Aqua division).
Thirteen graduate students (15 posters) will be participating in the Snyder Memorial Lecture Graduate Student Poster Competition. The students and their poster entries are:

4th Annual Regional Population, Health and Environmental Economics Midwest Graduate Student Summit
On April 16-17, several students and faculty from the department will be traveling to the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, to participate in the 4th Annual Regional Population, Health and Environmental Economics Midwest Graduate Student Summit. This is an event that originated in 2008 through the Space, Health and Population Economics (SHaPE) group here at Purdue. The Summit serves as opportunity for graduate students from universities in the Midwest (and beyond) to get together, network, share ideas, and present completed or ongoing research. The conference presentations address a variety of topics of growing importance to a community of applied economists and regional scientists, including topics in the areas of agricultural economics, health and nutrition, migration and labor, energy, environmental valuation, climate change, urban and regional economics, and spatial econometrics. Faculty members attending this year’s Summit include Drs. Raymond Florax and Brigitte Waldorf, as well as visiting professor Dr. Peter Mulder. Students attending and presenting research projects include Julia Beckhusen, Shellye Clark, Elizabeth Dobis, Alicia English, So Yeong Lim, Jing Liu, Bokar Moussa, Patrick Ward, and Anita Yadavalli. Renee Foltz is a recipient of a Chappelle Fellowship for 2011-12. Renee has been accepted in to the integrated BS/MS degree program for Fall 2011.

News from the Indiana Council for Economic Education:
Economics Challenge: ICEE will host another Economics Challenge Competition on April 12. It will take place at three locations: Mishawaka, Indianapolis, and New Albany. Teams of high school students compete on their knowledge of economics, taking written tests and then competing in an online “Quiz Bowl.” Over the years, Indiana teams have fared well in this national competition, winning a national championship and getting the finals on numerous occasions!
Economics Calendar Contest: Applications are coming in for economics drawings from students in grades 2-8 to be considered for the 2012 ICEE Economics Calendar. Deadline is April 15 – so there’s still time to enter. For details see: http://www.econed-in.org/calendar_rules.asp.
Chase Financial Literacy Project: ICEE is helping to implement a financial literacy curriculum in grades 6-12 at two large Indianapolis school corporations: MSD Perry Township and MSD Pike Township. Jeff Sanson is the ICEE staff person who is overseeing this important project.
Key Teacher Program: ICEE received a grant from the Indiana Commission for Higher Education to work with the Ball State Center for Economic Education to implement a Key Teacher Program. This summer, 20 teachers in Randolph County will take a graduate credit workshop focusing on integrating economics into the K-12 curriculum, especially math and language arts. Participants will then implement teaching units created in the workshop during the 2011-12 school year. Stay tuned!
News from Center for Global Trade Analysis:
The Center for Global Trade Analysis recently held the 2011 African Short Course in Global Trade Analysis from April 10-16 at the United Nations Conference Centre in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
In total, 25 individuals from 16 different countries participated in this course which was co-sponsored by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, the African Trade Policy Centre and the World Bank.
The short courses in global trade analysis are long-standing offerings of the Center for Global Trade Analysis which introduces participants to a standardized framework for conducting global trade analysis in an applied general equilibrium setting. The course also provides participants with ample hands-on training with software that has been tailored to global trade analysis and gives participants the opportunity to interact with economists working on global trade and resource use issues while becoming part of the international GTAP Network.

Seed Industry Professionals Learn Management Techniques at Purdue
More than 50 participants traveled to Purdue for the 24th annual ASTA Management Academy, held February 28-March 4 at the Krannert Center for Executive Education. Developed in conjunction with the American Seed Trade Association (ASTA), the academy is the center’s longest-running program and targets all seed industry professionals, from experienced decision makers to those new to the industry.
ASTA Chairman John Nelsen served as the executive speaker for the program, and Department of Agricultural Economics faculty members Phil Abbott, Freddie Barnard, Mike Boehlje, Larry DeBoer, Otto Doering, Frank Dooley, Scott Downey, Allan Gray, Tom Hertel and Wally Tyner also delivered sessions. Other speakers included Larry Lad, associate professor of management at Butler University, and Pete Hammett, managing director at Navigating Talent Sustainability. The program featured a structured exploration of essential management skills and topics, including marketing management, organizational leadership, financial management and strategic management.
"We had excellent speakers and the topics were relevant to today's environment," said Tim Nissen, Remington Seeds LLC operations manager based out of Mapleton, N.D. "Each day we split into smaller breakout groups and worked together to solve problems. During this time we got to see how different people solve different problems, which was really interesting and insightful."
Ag Retailing Professionals Attend ARA Management Academy
The center hosted 29 agribusiness managers from across the country March 8-10 for the ARA Management Academy, which is designed to help agribusiness leaders develop their management skill sets while networking with peers from throughout the ag retail sector.
The program featured sessions from Allan Gray, Scott Downey, Frank Dooley, and Mike Boehlje, all from the Department of Agricultural Economics, as well as Rodney Vandeveer from the Department of Organizational Leadership and Supervision and Carolyn Wiethoff from Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business.
Topics covered included thinking strategically about the future of agribusiness, operations for ag retailers, financial management, organizational leadership, and selling to large growers, which featured a panel of producers. The academy is offered through a partnership between the center and the Agricultural Retailers Association.
“I don’t know where else in the country that I could send our key people to get this kind of education from these kinds of educators,” said Mark Stutsman, vice president of Stutsman Inc. in Hills, Iowa.
Center for Commercial Agriculture Hosts Seminar on Making Financial Decisions in Your Farm Business
The Center for Commercial Agriculture partnered with Farm Credit Services of Mid-America to offer Making Financial Decisions in Your Farm Business. Sixty producers attended the program, which took place March 7-8 at The Trails in Lafayette.
Department of Agricultural Economics faculty members Craig Dobbins, Brent Gloy, Alan Miller and Nicole Olynk delivered sessions during the two-day workshop, which guided participants through the process of improving farm profitability and financial performance. Intended to help producers accurately assess the strengths and weaknesses of their operation, the program included sessions on thinking like a CFO, cash income and earnings, financial performance, managing risk and profitability analysis ratios. It also included sessions focusing on equity, balance sheets and repayment.
