Going Green Tip: Wash laundry in cold water or use warm-wash and cold-rinse cycles. BECAUSE: Most detergents work equally well regardless of water temperature. Using cold washes in every U.S. household would save the equivalent of 100,000 barrels of oil a day.
January trivia: Just over one hundred years ago, in 1904, the five leading causes of death in the United States were: 1. Pneumonia and influenza, 2. Tuberculosis, 3. Diarrhea, 4. Heart disease, and 5. Stoke.

News from Center for Food and Agricultural Business:
Center starts 2010 strong
The first month of 2010 will be full for center staff and instructors. The third class of the National Oilwell Varco (NOV)-Purdue University Sales Management Program: Building World-Class Capabilities will launch January 5 in Houston, Texas. The nine-month program is designed for NOV sales and sales management professionals who have shown promise as emerging or current NOV leaders. With a blend of face-to-face and distance instruction, participants will sharpen their skills in sales management and leadership.
The center will host managers from John Deere January 11-13 for a financial decision-making program. The group will focus on their ability to translate the quantitative aspects of financial management into a story that becomes a useful planning tool and helps them deepen their relationships with their dealers in a cooperative manner.
Participants in the fifth class of Agribusiness Leadership Plus at Purdue (ALPs) will travel to Brazil for their sixth and final session, beginning January 29. They will discuss agricultural trends in Latin America, visit various agribusinesses, including a coffee operation, and gain a better understanding of Syngenta’s current and future opportunities in that region. Patterned after an MBA and customized to Syngenta's businesses and markets, ALPs is a non-degree, 16-month program that focuses on management and leadership needs for future positions. It is offered from Syngenta Learning and Development in partnership with the center.
ARA Management Academy fills to capacity
With every available seat in the classroom filled, more than 55 agricultural retailers will attend the 2010 Agricultural Retailers Association (ARA) Management Academy, set for February 2-4. The group, representing 15 states and Canada, will spend their time on campus developing their management skill set, while also networking and sharing ideas with colleagues. Key faculty members from the department will serve as instructors throughout the program, covering topics such as marketing, finance, human resource management, operations, and strategy. Established in 2007, the academy is a partnership between the center and ARA, which advocates before Congress and the Executive Branch on behalf of the agricultural retail and distribution industry.
