2009 Distinguished Agriculture Alumni Award Recipients for Agricultural Economics are:  Elizabeth A. Bechdol, and Richard Halderman.   Ceremony will be held March 6th with a 2:30 pm reception and the Awards Convocation at 3:30 pm in the Purdue Memorial Union, North Ballroom.

Congratulations and Names in the News:

Otto Doering received the first Bruce Gardner Outstanding Visiting Economist Award at the USDA Economists meeting.  The award was presented by Richard Just.  A bit of information about the award:   Following the tragic loss of Bruce Gardner, the Executive Board was quick to approve the Bruce Gardner Outstanding Visiting Economist Award. It is designed to honor the service of academic and industry colleagues who have distinguished themselves through service to the USDA at some point in their careers.

John Mazunda, AGEC Senior, was selected as the 2009 recipient of the Martin C. Jischke Outstanding International Student Award.  The award is presented annually at the spring University Honors Convocation.  This award (a certificate and cash gift) is made possible by President Emeritus Martin C. Jischke, who was the 2007 recipient of the International Citizen of the Year Award given by the International Center of Indianapolis, in recognition of his “tremendous leadership in making global connections for Indiana.”  Dr. Jischke established this award to honor a Purdue student who has helped the University welcome and connect people of all cultures.

Mr. Mazunda has demonstrated throughout his career at Purdue the scholarship, leadership, service and character that makes him a very deserving recipient.   We are also pleased to announce that John will remain at Purdue for his Master of Science degree in Agricultural Economics.   He will be working with Dr. Gerald Shively on a USAID-funded project in Malawi.

Kwamena Quagrainie received the Distinguished Early Career Award from the US Aquaculture Society – Seattle Washington, February 13-19, 2009.   The Distinguished Early Career Award recognizes an individual who has been involved in U.S. aquaculture for 10 years or less. This award recognizes outstanding leadership or innovation in research, education, extension, or industry development in the field of aquaculture. The award specifically emphasizes significant personal contributions made to further advance U.S. aquaculture.

Ben Gramig received the 2008 Best PhD Dissertation Award from the Department of Agricultural, Food and Resource Economics, Michigan State University.

John Connor was appointed a Senior Fellow by the American Antitrust Institute of Washington, DC in February 2009, one of six industrial-organization economists to serve in that position. He has served on its Board of Advisors since July 2003.
