Otto Doering receives a share of the Nobel Prize.  On December 10, 2007, The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), along with former Vice President Al Gore, was presented with the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for its investigation and scientific reports regarding the correlation between human activities and climate change over the last 20 years. The IPCC was formed in 1988 by the World Meteorological Organization and by the United Nations Environment Programme as an objective conglomeration of government and science. To provide the most complete and accurate policy-neutral information, the IPCC collects and examines contributions from 2,500 expert researchers and scientists from over 130 nations in all regions of the world, in a diverse range of scientific

disciplines. This collaboration includes a substantial pool of the world's scientific leaders, including several members of American Agricultural Economics Association (AAEA).

Recently, the chair of the IPCC contacted a number of agricultural economists involved as lead authors in the IPCC 2007. A letter from that chair read, in part, “I have been stunned in a pleasant way with the news of the award of the Nobel Peace Prize for the IPCC. This makes each of you a Nobel Laureate and it is my privilege to acknowledge this honour on your behalf.” Follow up correspondence indicated that the IPCC extended the designation to authors of previous Assessment and Special Reports.  Among several other agricultural economists who contributed to these reports, Otto Doering was a lead author of the chapter on the agricultural sector in Methodological and Technological Issues in Technology Transfer: A Special Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (2000).

Across these reports, agricultural economists contributed material on the economic consequences of climate change effects, greenhouse gas emission reduction actions, and adaptation identifying damages opportunities and needed adjustments.  [This information was originally reported in the January/February issue of the AAEA Newsletter, The Exchange. ]

Marshall Martin receives the Certificate of Distinction from the Purdue Ag Alumni Association.  Marshall, along with seven other Hoosiers, was honored at this year's Fish Fry for his work in the areas of agricultural policy and the economic assessment of agricultural biotechnology and integrated pest management.  He was also recognized for his work in his capacity as Associate Director of Agricultural Research Programs with Indiana agricultural organizations such as the Indiana Pork Board.  For more information about Marshall and the other individuals honored see: http://news.uns.purdue.edu/x/2008a/080204LesterDistinction.html .

LeeAnn Williams receives 2007-2008 Outstanding Advisor Award from the Purdue Academic Advising Association.  LeeAnn received this award from her peers February 12.  The Awards Selection Committee chair noted in her letter to me that “Although we had a number of outstanding nominations, the Awards Committee felt that LeeAnn was the strongest nominee…We were amazed and inspired by the hard work, time, and dedication that LeeAnn brings to our campus, and are delighted to have someone with such notable achievements as a colleague.”  Our students and our entire department benefit greatly from LeeAnn's work.

Akinwumi A. Adesina, Vice President, Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa, The Rockefeller Foundation, New York, NY. MS '85, PhD '88 named 2008 Distinguished Agricultural Alumni for the Department.

Otto Doering has been appointed to the Environmental Protection Agency's Farm, Ranch, and Rural Communities Advisory Committee and will be making a presentation at their first meeting March 12 th .
