Thought You Would Like to Know:

This spring, the Indiana Council for Economic Education (ICEE) will offer the Indiana Stock Market Game (SMG) free to Indiana schools.  The SMG is a stock simulation in which teams of 4-5 students invest a hypothetical $100,000 in stocks or mutual funds over a ten week period.  By participating in SMG, students are introduced to financial markets, factors that affect stock prices, stock selection criteria, the mathematics of investing in stocks, team building skills, and much more.  For information go to http://www.stockmarketgame.org/  or visit the ICEE website ( www.econed-in.org ).

The department will feature New Ventures and the MS-MBA distance delivered program at the upcoming Mid-America Ag Show on February 5-6 in the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis.

Arrived:  Luciano Castro, a Visiting Scholar from the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, is now in residence working with Prof. Jay Akridge on benchmarking how U.S. firms consider marketing channels in designing agrifood business models.

Departure:  Ayman Shelaby, a Visiting Scholar from Fayoum University, Egypt, is departing on Jan 31, after working with Prof. Maria Marshall on small business development issues.

Hertel, T.W. “Working at the Extensive Margin of CGE Analysis”, Paper presented to the EAAE Conference on Modeling Agriculture and Rural Development Policies, Sevilla, Spain, January 29, 2008.

Hertel, T.W. “The Biofuels Boom:  Implications for World Food Markets”, based on a joint paper with D. Birur and W.E. Tyner, presented at the IATRC meetings, Washington, D.C., January 9, 2008.

Edna Loehman presented a paper: Instream Flow as a Public Good: Possibilities for Economic Organization and Voluntary Local Provision, at the AAEA session at the ASSA meetings in New Orleans Jan. 3-6.

Dr. Wally Tyner:

January 4 he presented a paper at the Allied Social Science Meetings in New Orleans, LA.

January 10 th he presented a seminar at DOE/NREL in Washington, D.C. on “Policy Alternatives for Integrated Energy and Agricultural Markets.”

On February 5 he will have a presentation at the Farm Foundation Forum in Washington, D.C. The topic will be “Policy Impacts on Global Markets in an Environment of Integrated Energy and Agricultural Markets.”

February 12 he will present a paper at Farm Foundation conference "The Bio Economy - Today and Tomorrow" in Atlanta, GA.

February 14 he will present a paper at the Advancing Science, Serving Society (AAAS) Conference in Boston, MA.

February 18-19 he will present papers at a FAO conference in Rome on “Impacts of US Biofuels Policies” and “Global Impacts of US and EU Biofuels Policies.”

David Ubilava will present a paper at SAEA meeting in Dallas, TX, in the beginning of February. The title of the paper is “Analysis of the Soybean-to-Corn Price Ratio and its Impact on Farmers' Planting Decision-Making in Indiana”.
