Seminar 12-1:30 pm KRAN 661: John Connor – A Critique of Cartel Fine Discounting by the U.S. Department of Justice
Homecoming – Ag Tent on the Memorial Lawn

September 17, Dean Randy Woodson will visit the department for the afternoon. The department will showcase features and programs about which the Dean may be unfamiliar. The schedule is planned to include a lunch between the Dean and our students, discussions with John Connor on his work with international cartels, with Raymond Florax and others on the developments in the SHAPE program, and with the faculty about what is going on in the department. Also featured will be MS-MBA program highlights, and the Kenya project with Maria, Ken, and graduate students. The Dean will discuss Sally's five year review. Sept 25-26 Dr. Bruce Scherr, CEO of Informa Economics will visit the department. He will be presenting a seminar to the department and meeting with the undergraduate and graduate students. Mark Partridge will be here on Friday, October 19th to present a departmental seminar. He currently holds the C. William Swank Chair of Rural-Urban Policy in the Department of Agricultural, Environmental, and Development Economics at THE Ohio State University. Prior to that, he was the Canada Research Chair in the New Rural Economy at the University of Saskatchewan. He has published over 60 academic and scholarly papers that have appeared in journals such as the American Economic Review, Journal of Public Economics, Journal of Urban Economics, and Review of Economics and Statistics. He received his PH.D. in Economics from the University of Illinois.

Congratulations and Names in the News:

On August 22nd, 2007, Dr. Simeon Ehui was elected to the inaugural group of Fellows of the African Association of Agricultural Economists, at the first major conference of that newly-formed Association. Simeon and his wife Mamou Ehui had been named Distinguished Agricultural Alumni in 2001. Simeon is now leading the World Bank's agriculture programs in Nigeria, and Mamou was recently appointed to the World Bank in Washington, as Advisor to the Executive Director representing West African countries. Congratulations to both of them!

Harlan Day received the John C. Schramm Leadership Award from the National Association of Economic Educators at the National Council of Economic Education's Annual Meeting in October.   This award is given to one individual annually whose leadership has had an extraordinary, positive impact at both the state and national levels.

Will Masters travelled to Accra, Ghana in August to participate in the first major conference of the African Association of Agricultural Economists. Purdue was prominently represented at that meeting: alumnus Dr. Simeon Ehui was named a Fellow of the Association, and other alumni featured on the program included Dr. Ousmane Coulibaly from the IITA station in Cotonou, Benin; Dr. Diakalia Sanogo from IITA headquarters in Ibadan, Nigeria; and Dr. Augustine Langyintuo of CIMMYT in Harare, Zimbabwe. Will Masters was also able to visit with Tomo Ishigawa, a recent M.S. graduate working in Accra for JICA, the Japanese foreign aid agency, who was very happy to send greetings to Dr. Abbott and his friends at Purdue.

Homecoming will take place October 27 th as Purdue takes on the Northwestern Wildcats at a noon kickoff. We will again have faculty trading cards and the honorees are: Luc Valentin, Scott Downey, Holly Wang, and Dave Petritz . The College of Agriculture will host a tent on the Memorial Lawn and there will be a buffet from 9 to 11. Meal ticket TBA. The deadline for ordering meal tickets: Monday, October 15 th . Football tickets will be available at a group rate of $32 per ticket (everyone entering the stadium must have a ticket, regardless of age). The deadline for ordering is Monday, Sept. 10 th . News from GTAP:

The Center for Global Trade Analysis recently held the Fifteenth Annual Short Course in Global Trade Analysis here on the campus of Purdue University from August 4-10, 2007.

The course consisted of two main parts:

Part I was a series of weekly, online modules aimed at increasing the familiarity of the course participants with the theory behind GTAP, the standard GTAP notation, and the course software. Part II was an intensive, week-long course consisting of a mix of daily lectures, lab assignments, and informal discussions designed to introduce participants to the basic features of the model and GTAP Data Base. In total, 33 individuals from 20 different countries participated in this course; all contributing to its astounding success.

Wally Tyner presented a paper at the USDA Global Biofuels Conference in Minneapolis August 20-21.  He will present a paper at the US Energy Economics Association meetings in Houston September 16-19.

In July 2007,  Brigitte Waldorf  presented a paper, co-authored with Dr. Susan Chen and Eda Unal  at the First World Congress of the Spatial Econometrics Association (SEA) in Cambridge, UK.  The paper analyzed the impact of health care accessibility on infant mortality, elderly mortality, and health behaviors.
