The Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service Banquet was held October 17 th . The following awards were presented to AGEC faculty by the Purdue University Cooperative Extension Specialists Association and the Indiana Extension Educators Association. Congratulations to:
Jay Akridge – Mid Career Award
Working with food and agribusiness has been Jay Akridge's primary focus for nearly 20 years. Jay directs Purdue's Center for Food and Agricultural business that hosts an average of 1000 food and agribusiness managers per year, and directs the Purdue-IU MS-MBA food and agribusiness management degree program that uses innovative Internet-based distance education technology to serve individuals in Indiana and across the nation who want to pursue a world-class graduate education in economics and management. Jay has helped the Purdue Statewide Learning Center Network develop strategic plans, and served as an instructor for Indiana Small Business Development Centers. He is involved in the Agricultural Innovation and Commercialization Center writing CES publications and in teaching educational seminars.
Janet Ayres – Career Award
Janet Ayres is passionate about rural people and communities. She has focused her work on building the capacity of rural communities to deal with change by being involved in the development of 20 state programs including the Indiana Ag Leadership Program, Take Charge, the Natural Resources Leadership Development Institute, Leadership 20/20, and the Purdue Land Use Team. She has developed nearly 40 leadership and community curricula that have been used with nearly 10,000 Extension staff across the country. Janet practices leadership, having served in over 100 leadership positions in state, regional and national organizations as well as in her home community. She fosters leadership through her undergraduate class and the development of two new student leadership programs.

The New Ventures Team/Agricultural Innovation and Commercialization Center is filling a critical void by actively assisting entrepreneurs in evaluating ideas for developing new businesses and for growing existing businesses. A strong interaction between county educators and campus specialists on all aspects of the program is the key to the successes of this program. The team has developed a program that assists new and existing businesses become more viable and profitable through individualized consultations, innovative publications (21), state and national workshops and conferences, and an Internet business planning tool called In Venture that has state, national, and international users.
The Agribusiness/NAMA Club and the Department of Agricultural Economics will host a reception in celebration of our very own, Old Master , Steve Bishop. Steve graduated from the Department in 1986, working for Procter and Gamble in food purchasing. He is currently the Vice President for the North America Fabric Care Division. The reception is scheduled for November 7, 1:30-2:30, KRAN 661.

The Summit 's overall goal is to provide a positive environment to learn techniques that will foster future investments, technological advancement, and dynamic growth in our Indiana communities. Specifically, the Summit is designed to provide Hoosier leaders opportunities to learn creative ways to tackle development challenges and understand better the RISE (Rural Indiana Strategy for Excellence) 2020 strategic action framework. Conferees will also have opportunities to share "best practices,” while reinforcing the linkages Indiana communities have statewide, nationally, and internationally.
ICEE
The 2006 Economic Education Expo and ICEE Annual Awards Program will be held on Friday, November 3 rd , 8:00 am to 2:30 pm at The Fountains, Carmel Indiana .
The Indiana Council for Economic Education (ICEE) was recently awarded a Five Year Affiliation status with the National Council on Economic Education (NCEE) at the NCEE Annual Conference Awards Dinner on October 12 th in New York City . The ICEE is one of 42 councils across the United States , and actively pursues excellence in economic education through providing K-12 teachers with training and resources to effectively integrate economics into their everyday classroom.
The commendation from the National Council for Economic Education is expressive of the shared mission and goals, standards and guidelines, and aspirations for advancing economic and personal finance education in the nation's schools.
The Indiana Council for Economic Education is a non-profit, educational organization located at Purdue University . Founded in 1954, the ICEE is a comprehensive partnership of leaders from business, labor, agriculture, education, and government dedicated to increasing economic literacy in Indiana . Its mission is to prepare students to become active citizens and productive members of our economy by providing them with the ability to make sound economic decisions.
Through a statewide network of regional University Centers, and in cooperation with the Indiana Department of Education, the ICEE provides economic education training, materials, and consulting assistance to thousands of Indiana educators each year.
Bill Oesterle recently endowed a chair professorship in the History Department inhonor of his mother, Germanie Oesterle, (Gerry) widow of Eric Oesterle , long-time professor in Agricultural Economics.
