Congratulations and Names in the News:
Otto Doering has been elected to be President of the American Agricultural Economics Association for 2007-2008. He will also serve as President-Elect in 2006-2007, and Past-President for 2008-2009. Please join us in congratulating Otto and wishing him the best of luck in leading our professional organization in the coming years!
Nels J. Ackerson was named the 2006 Honorary Doctor of Agriculture. Mr. Ackerson earned his B.S. in Agricultural Economics at Purdue University in 1967. He holds a Masters in public policy and a Juris Doctorate (cum laude) from Harvard University .
Currently of Ackerson Kaufmann Fex PC, in Washington , D.C. , he was chairman and founder of the Ackerson Group. Chief Counsel of a U.S. Senate Subcommittee, and has been lead counsel in many international proceedings regarding trade and dispute resolutions.
Ackerson is a pioneer in representing landowners against railroad corporations and a major telecommunications company in class action litigation regarding right-of-way corridors. This litigation created a number of landmark decisions in several state and federal courts, including settlements that affected property holders in both Indiana and other states. Most recently, he represented the N.K. Hurst Company in its successful quest to maintain the Hurst family bean factory on the site in Indianapolis , IN , where it has stood for generations.
May Events
- The department hosted the Farm Bureau Supper Series for Indiana Farm Bureau and various Purdue staff on Monday, May 8 2006 at 5:30 pm in the Dauch Alumni Center . The topic of discussion for the evening was “Economics of Biofuels,” facilitated by Purdue faculty, Don Jones, Nate Mosier, Wally Tyner, and Chris Hurt.
- The department joined the College of Agriculture in the Agriculture Commencement Reception on Saturday, May 13 in the Shively Club at Ross Ade Pavilion. There was a department display, where students were greeted by Sally Thompson, Craig Dobbins, Frank Dooley or Lee Ann Williams. The Ag Econ department led the college in the number of graduating seniors this year, including the outstanding University senior, and winner of the Flora Roberts Award, Tanya Hadley.

Farmers' Markets Workshops – Workshops are being scheduled throughout the state in April, May, and June to provide farmers' market vendors, market masters, organizers and managers an overview of marketing ideas, food handling regulations and insurance issues. Jennifer Dennis is the workshop coordinator. She is an assistant professor in Horticulture and Landscape Architecture, as well as Agricultural Economics. For dates and to register, please visit here.
Developing a specialty food or food ingredient business - Maria Marshall , assistant professor of Agricultural Economics recently presented a workshop about developing a specialty food or food ingredient business. The 74 th Annual Farm Management Tour will be held June 28 – 29. The tour will highlight farms in Madison and Hamilton counties. Chris Hurt, from the Department of Agricultural Economics, will provide a market outlook update for crops and livestock. The 39 th Annual Top Farmer Crop Workshop will be held July 16 – 19 th this year. The workshop integrates university, private sector, and farm industry experts into a single interdisciplinary workshop known for being the first to introduce and help producers evaluate new technology and management practices. The workshop also provides a forum to debate cropping strategy with scientists, agribusiness leaders and other large scale growers. Travel, Speeches and Presented Papers:
Otto Doering is chairing a session and providing comments on papers at the Policy History Conference June 2 nd in Charlottsville VA. The session is on the history of conservation in farm programs.
Otto Doering is speaking at a Farm Bill Forum June 21 st in Washington , D.C. on “Natural Resources, Conservation and Green Payments”. This will be a response to the American Farmland Trust's proposal for the next farm bill.
Kwamena Quuagraine: June 11-14. Travel to Alpena , Michigan for the 2006 Great Lakes Sea Grant Network Conference.
Bob Taylor , May 11-28 th , Egypt , presenting seminars to Upper Egypt faculty on how to teach farm management as a part of the MUCIA team project.
Carlos Ludena will be traveling to Paraguay from June 3 rd to June 30 th to train and teach mid-level economists from the Ministry of Finance and the Central Bank of Paraguay in computable general equilibrium modeling. This project is funded by the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA). And, presenting a paper called “Productivity Growth and Convergence in Agriculture and its Effects on World Food Trade” at the 2006 International Food and Agribusiness Management Association 16th Annual Forum and Symposium in Buenos Aires, Argentina, June 10-13, 2006.
Gerald Shively and Jessica Perdew attended the World Cocoa Foundation partnership meeting in Brussels , May 16-19.
Janet Ayres participated in a USDA/CSREES review of the Community Development Applied Economics Department at the University of Vermont , May 16-19, 2006. Other reviewers included Sally Maggard, CSREES; Scott Loveridge, Michigan State University ; Bo Beaulieu, Southern Regional Rural Development Center, and James Shanahan, Cornell University .
Janet Ayres participated in a national meeting of the Extension community economic development program leaders May 23-25 in Washington , D.C. Janet gave a presentation on the Foundations of Practice , a curriculum on community development core competencies for Extension professionals. This is a national program she has developed during her quarter-time appointment with the North Central Regional Center for Rural Development.
Janet Ayres participated in a multi-state student leadership development program May 15-18 in Chicago . A USDA Challenge grant was received by Purdue, Universities of Illinois and Wisconsin to develop this 21-month program for college sophomores. The recently held train-the-trainer workshop will enable the ten students from each university to return to their home campuses and conduct leadership sessions with their respective on-campus organizations. Each cohort group will meet on all three campuses over the next 21 months to learn the 16 leadership modules. While in Chicago , Ayres and a small group of students participated in a “Leadership-in-Action” afternoon session at the Cook County Jail to see an innovative urban gardening program with inmates. They also visited the leaders of “Slum-busters”, a program that has revitalized an inner-city neighborhood. The students were able to see leadership from different facets of life and from people usually not associated with leadership – yet people who are making a difference. Three other groups of students participated in different afternoon sessions. These visits were arranged by Illinois Extension. Purdue will host the program in November.
