Congratulations and Names in the News:

Alexia Brunet has accepted a Postdoc at the University of Southern California , in a joint appointment between the Viterbi School of Engineering and the USC School of Policy, Planning and Development. She will be working in the Homeland Security Center for Risk and Economic Analysis of Terrorism Events.

Wally Tyner received a Purdue University “Seed for Success” award for participating as a co-PI in a grant of over $1 million.

Econ Challenge coming up April 12th.  Three sites:  Mishawaka , Indianapolis and New Albany .  High School Economics students compete in a statewide competition for the opportunity to represent Indiana in a regional event.   In 2002 and 2003 Indiana had entries in the national competition, and in 2003 the Carmel High School teams placed first and second in the nation!

Mariah Tanner Emke gave a poster presentation at the Sigma Xi poster contest on February 17 th entitled: “Consumers Demand for Meat before and after Fat Content Education,” with Paul Preckel and Everett Peterson.  

G. Edward Schuh, BS '52, honorary doctorate '92, Lake Elmo , Minn. , was honored July 25 by the Brazilian Society of Agricultural Economics with a new award, Legendary Member of the Society, in recognition of his lifetime contributions to the profession. The honor was bestowed during the annual meeting of the society in Cuiaba , in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso. Schuh served on the faculty of the Department and was involved with Purdue's extension project work at Vicosa University in Brazil .

Travel, Speeches and Presented Papers:

Raymond Florax will attend the conference of the Western Regional Science Association (WRSA) in San Diego, February 23-26, and present a paper entitled “Space and Growth: A Survey of Empirical Evidence and Methods.” The paper is joint work with Maria Abreu and Henri L.F. de Groot.

Jennifer Dennis: March 10th at the Northwest Indiana Floriculture Association- "How to keep customers happy: factors determining repeat patronage" in Hobart , IN.

Jennifer Dennis: March 11th at the Southwest Melon and Vegetable Grower Association - "Understanding Today's Vegetable Consumer" in Vincennes , IN.

Otto Doering will be presenting a paper March 16th at a research and policy workshop "The Next Farm Bill: Links Among Agriculture, Energy, Trade and Poverty In a Globalizing World" that is sponsored by USDA's Chief Economists Office and the National Center for Food and Agricultural Policy.

Joe Balatas will be presenting a paper at the Spring 2005 NEC-63 Conference, March 17-18 in San Diego , CA . The theme of the conference is "The Economics of Commodity Promotion Programs: Lessons from California ". He will present a paper titled "Returns to the Dairy-check off Investment in Research for New Uses for Whey".
