Governor Kernan and Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Reed, recognized Otto Doering's service on the Governor's Education Roundtable at its Dec. 15th meeting. 

ELEANOR KAPLAN AWARD

Sally announced that Kim Mullen, Business Manager, was just awarded the Eleanor O. Kaplan award for Exceptional Customer Service. Many testimonials from the Ag Econ department were sent in support of Kim's nomination. In winning this award, Kim had to meet criteria for exhibiting exceptional customer service in one or more of the following ways:

a.      made significant contributions to improving customer service in either their department, school or organization

b.      demonstrated the ability to incorporate outstanding improvements in either their department, school or organization through individual leadership

c.      and/or exhibited creative or innovative methods in providing customer service

PERSONNEL ANNOUNCEMENTS

Ms. Ginger McColley has been hired and begun work in GTAP, Room 560, as an Information Technology Specialist. She received her B.S. in Computer Graphics Technology from Purdue in May 2003.

 

Holiday Recognition Luncheon Held:

The Department gathered to honor its award-winning faculty and staff at the annual holiday recognition luncheon on December 15. The afternoon's theme centered around the popular show, Survivor. The luncheon's program included recognition of 30 faculty and staff who have received honors over the course of the year, including promotions and obtaining significant grants. The theme for the event was the popular show, Survivor. The Drawing Room of the Krannert Building was decorated to recreate a tropical island, complete with palm trees, a bonfire, jungle sounds, a smoking volcano, and table centerpieces featuring live fish. Entertainment was provided by the Ag Econ Graduate Student Organization enacted skits based on activities seen in the Survivor television series, but with an economic twist.

 

Thought You Would Like To Know:

The Agricultural Innovation and Commercialization Center (AICC) participated in the Indiana Farm Bureau's annual convention in Indianapolis , December 18. Joined by the New Ventures team of Extension Educators, the Center highlighted entrepreneurship support efforts provided through Purdue Extension to the 1,700 attendees. Jane Anderson, Joan Fulton and Cole Ehmke handed out copies of AICC's publications and promoted the use of the AICC Business Planner at which users can begin writing a business plan. Travel, Speeches and Presented Papers:

Wally Tyner traveled to Morocco and Algeria in December.  In Morocco , he worked on a Purdue project on agricultural policy reform.  In Algeria he presented a conference keynote address entitled “Agricultural Policy Reform in the Context of Trade Liberalization and Climatic Variability – the Case of Morocco.”

Huey-Lin Lee participated in the kick-off meeting of Stanford Energy Modelling Forum's (EMF) 22 nd study on “Climate Policy Scenarios for Stabilization and in Transition”, held in Brussels , Belgium , November 10-12. Huey-Lin presented the GTAP land-use and greenhouse gases emissions data base to the Integrated Assessment (IA) community of climate change.

Wally Tyner, Terri Walmsley and Huey-Lin Lee participated in the Purdue Climate Change Research Center 's (PCCRC) first workshop on “Climate Change Research and Education at Purdue”, held on campus, November 19 th , and presented a poster introducing the GTAP capacity in climate change analysis.

Maria Marshall and Whitney Oliver will be presenting a paper titled “The Importance of Financial, Human, and Social Capital during the Gestation Stage of the Entrepreneurial Process for Rural Entrepreneurs in Indiana ” at the 2005 AEA meetings in Philadelphia , PA. on January 6-9.

Maria Marshall will give presentations at the Horticulture Congress on January 24 and 26 related to small business management.

Maria Marshall will speak at the Pulaski County Annual Meeting on January 25 about entrepreneurship programs.

Maria Marshall will travel to Cairo , Egypt on January 27-February 9 to conduct a small business planning course.

Alexander, Dobbins, Marshall , Patrick, and Wilson will conduct two workshops titled “Human Resource Risk and Contingency Planning”. The first workshop is in West Lafayette , IN on January 21 and the second workshop is in Sellersburg , IN on February 4.

Jennifer Dennis will present a talk entitled “ Understanding Today's Consumer” at the Illiana Vegetable Growers' School in Schererville Indiana on January 6, 2005 and present a talk entitled “Repeat Garden Center Customers: Why or Why Not” at the Indiana Nurserymen & Landscape Association P.L.A.N.T.S. conference on January 12, 2005.

December 2 - 4: Thomas Hertel organized an international conference in The Hague  on "Putting Development back into the Doha Agenda". This was sponsored by the World Bank and involved sixteen papers, including three global studies and 13 country case studies.

On December 1, Roman Keeney presented the following paper in The Hague : Hertel, T.W., and R. Keeney, 2004. “The Balance between Domestic Support, Market Access and Export Competition: Where do Developing Country Interests Lie?” presented at a conference on Agricultural Trade Reform and the Doha Development Agenda , The Hague , December 1.

Bob Taylor has been invited to be the keynoter at the North Carolina Young Farmers Conference, January 22, talking about “Farming with Family When Dad is the Biggest Problem”.
