Congratulations and Names in the News:

Departmental Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation for 2003 was awarded to Jeffrey Reimer for his PhD dissertation “Traded Intermediate Goods, Non-Homothetic Consumer Demands, and the Factor Content of Trade”. Dr. Thomas Hertel served as major advisor.

Congratulations to the following PhD students who passed the Microeconomic Theory Prelim: Yuliya Bolotova, Kathryn Boys, Anetra Harbor and Rafael Uaiene.

Indiana Council for Economic Education (ICEE) News:

Two Indiana teachers have received awards from the National Council on Economic Education/NASDAQ National Teaching Awards Competition.
Kokomo teacher, Lisa Herman Ellison was named a Regional Winner for her portfolio “The United States in the Global Economy”. Teachers from over 40 states participated in the competition. Lisa has been an outstanding proponent of economic education in Central Indiana and serves as an advocate for the Indiana Council, mentoring and encouraging other teachers to use ICEE resources to enrich their classroom teaching methods. Lisa will be honored in April 2004, receiving a cash award of $10,000 at a gala at the Plaza Hotel in New York. During this all-expense paid trip, she will participate in opening the NASDAQ Stock Market on April 20th and has the potential of being named Grand National Award Winner, receiving an additional $15,000.

Goshen teacher, Dana Mehl, has been named a Regional Semi-Finalist with her portfolio “Be An Entrepreneur”. Dana has been an outstanding teacher, involving her students in mentoring elementary students in the Indiana Stock Market Simulation, coaching Economics Challenge teams, and promoting economic education throughout her school system and the northern Indiana area. She will be presented with a plaque and a check for $1,000 for her achievement from the NCEE on the Indiana Council on February 12th at the Goshen Chamber of Commerce event, Wake Up Goshen.

Travel, Speeches and Presented Papers:

Joan Fulton was an invited speaker at the Farm Credit Council Annual meeting on Miami Florida on January 20, 2004.

Scott Downey, Joan Fulton, Bobby Martens, and Tomas Nilsson worked with the Mid America Cooperative Council to develop and deliver two one-day Cooperative Director Training workshops. The workshops were held in Sandusky, Ohio on January 6, 2004 and in Indianapolis IN on January 8, 2004
