Dr. Huie Honored

On Thursday, May 15, at a dinner meeting between Purdue School of Agriculture and Indiana Farm Bureau staff and leadership, John Huie was honored with a Sagamore of the Wabash. Mike Gery, Executive Assistant to Governor O’Bannon, presented the honor to Dr. Huie in recognition of his outstanding career at Purdue and in state government and for his service to the citizens of Indiana. Others who were supportive of John’s nomination included local legislators Senator Ron Alting, Representative Sue Scholer, and Representative Sheila Klinker, and Farm Bureau representative, Bob Cherry, who helped with the presentation.

Dr. Huie has a long and varied career serving the people of Indiana and the students and personnel at Purdue University. He joined the Purdue faculty in 1968 as a professor in the School of Agriculture. His major areas of expertise included financing of state and local government, solid-waste management, community development and public policy.

In 1976, John took a leave of absence from Purdue to accept an appointment as state budget director in Gov. Otis Bowen’s administration. In 1981 he became chairman of the State Board of Tax Examiners where he served until 1983 when he became the executive assistant for policy development under Gov. Robert Orr.

In 1985, Dr. Huie returned to Purdue where he worked in an administrative capacity and handled special projects for President Steven Beering. In 1987, John was promoted to vice president for state relations. In this capacity, he served as Purdue’s full-time liaison with the state legislature and other state agencies.

In 1999, John returned to the Ag Economics Department and also served as a special assistant to the president where he was the liaison with the governor for policy analysis and economic development. In addition, he was appointed by the governor to serve on INTELENET, the state commission that brokers telecommunications services for public entities. Congratulations, John!
