Congratulations and Names in the News:

Allan Gray was awarded the United States Distance Learning Associations' 2002 Award for Excellence in Distance Learning Teaching - Higher Education for the Executive MBA in Agribusiness at Purdue University. Eleven national awards were presented by USDLA in Washington, D.C. on April 10th.

Two AGEC faculty were honored with University Awards: Jay Akridge won the Award for Excellence in Distance Learning, Best Credit-Granting Program, for the Executive MBA program; and Allan Gray won the Class of 1922 Helping Students Learn Award.

Promotions: Congratulations to T. Channing Arndt promoted to Associate Professor and William A. Masters, promoted to Professor.

Otto Doering has been appointed the National Science Foundation Evaluator for the Cooling Technologies Research Center. This is one of NSF's Industry/University Cooperative Research Centers. Otto is also serving as an NSF evaluator for the Power Systems Engineering Research Center, another NSF/IUCRC that involves 35 firms and 12 universities.

On April 22, the Indiana Council for Economics Education sponsored the 3rd annual Economic Challenge. Teams of high school students competed on their knowledge of economics at three different sites: Indianapolis, Mishawaka, and Muncie. There were two divisions - advanced and regular economics, with the winning teams in each division advancing to Chicago for the regional competition. Winners at the regional will advance to New York for the national finals. The competition is supported financially in Indiana by Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield and Goldman Sachs.

Travel, Speeches and Presented Papers

Channing Arndt completed a three week policy modeling course at the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies in March.

Kevin McNamara traveled to Kabul, Afghanistan with two Purdue Colleagues to meet with the Minister of Higher Education and Kabul University administrators and faculty to discuss re-establishing higher education in Afghanistan. Purdue is working with the Ministry of Higher Education and university faculty to develop plans for rebuilding the schools of agriculture, engineering, technology, and other programs.

Gerald Shively traveled to the University of Agriculture and Forestry, Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) Vietnam, March 26-April 10th and to the Philippines to attend the annual planning meeting for SANREM CRSP.
