Congratulations and Names in the News:
Jennifer Vandeburg will be leaving the Department in mid-January
to work with Dirk Maier in ABE.
Matt Mooney has accepted a position at the University of
Arizona as Distance Education Specialist for the Arizona
Area Health Education Centers for the state of Arizona effective
April 2002.
Professor Larry Bohl, who has been a teacher and counselor
with the Agricultural Economics department for over 35 years
will be retiring as of January 4, 2002. The department has
planned a special retirement program for Dr. Bohl to be
held at 3:00 p.m. in the Krannert Drawing Room (main floor
of Krannert) on Thursday, January 24, 2002. Dr. Bohl would
be honored by your presence.
Dr. Levi Cabanilla, School of Public Affairs, University
of the Philippines at Los Banos, is visiting the department
for several months. He will be working with Dr. Gerald Shively.

Sections of AGEC Staff Paper 98-18 were cited in an official
decision of the Competition Directorate of the European
Commission that imposed fines totaling $110 million on five
companies for illegal price fixing. Dr. John Connor
Ag Econ launches a new Study Abroad web site:
The start of the fall semester was marked by the introduction
of a new destination on the world wide web. The site, designed
by Associate Professor Gerald Shivery and department web
specialist Matt Mooney, aims to promote and facilitate study
abroad among Ag Econ undergraduates. The site includes basic
information on study abroad, video clips from students who
have recently studied abroad, and a ‘location finder'
designed to help students locate study abroad programs that
match their interests. The site, which is located at www.agecon.purdue.edu/study_abroad
also contains special information for parents of study abroad
students as well as information for individuals and institutions
interested in sponsoring undergraduate study aborad.
Indiana Council for Economic Education (ICEE) Executive
Director, Harlan Day and Associate Director, Bev Brewer,
will travel to Tampa, Florida in mid-January to meet with
their counterparts at the Florida Council on Economic Education.
ICEE Chairman, Mike Brian of AEP, will also make the trip,
meeting with the Chairman of the Florida Council. The purpose
of the meeting is to share information, successful programs,
and new fundraising strategies.

The Center for Food and Agricultural Business will host
participants for several different programs in February.
The Executive Institute for Commercial Producers, a collaborative
effort between Farm Credit Services of Mid-America and Purdue
University, is a series of seminars conducted for young
and innovative large-scale producers. The second class of
EICP producers will be in its second session on the West
Lafayette campus from Feb. 11-13. Class 1 is in its fourth
session from Feb. 15-16, which will take place in Louisville,

The center is holding another session in the strategy seminar
series, Feb. 20-21, with Central Soya, a company of Cereol,
which is leading European processor of oilseeds in Europe
and the world leader for the further processed lecithins.
About 30 employees of Central Soya participate in this program.
The Executive Management Forum for the American Seed Trade
Association is a new program that will take place Feb. 25-27
in Chicago, IL. This event is specifically designed by the
Center for executives in the seed industry.
Programs sponsored by the Center are taught primarily by
Purdue faculty in the Department of Agricultural Economics
and Center staff. Other Purdue faculty and guests from other
universities also serve as instructors in the programs.

Travel, Speeches and Presented Papers
Jay T. Akridge presented a seminar "Distance Delivered
Adult Education: Some Lessons from the Purdue EMBA in Food
and Agribusiness" on January 25th at the Ohio State
University.
Paul Preckel hosted the annual meeting of regional research
committee NC-205 titled "Ecology and Management of
European Corn Borer and Other Stalk-Boring Lepidoptera"
in Indianapolis, January 27-30.
Travel, Speeches and Presented Papers:
Otto Doering traveled in early January to Menomonie and
LaCrosse, Wisconsin to talk on options for the coming farm
bill for the University of Wisconsin Extension Service.

Edna Loehman will present a paper for the Workshop in Public
Finance, Department of Economics, University of Chicago,
January 16 at 3:30 entitled "Cost Sharing for Public
Goods: Exploring Alternative Institutions for Coordination
under Heterogeneity". In December, Edna Loehman represented
Purdue University at the NC230 regional meeting ("Integrating
Biophysical Functions of Riparian Systems with Management
Practices and Policies"). This meeting was held in
conjunction with the Midwest Fish and Wildlife Society annual
meeting.
Will Masters met with the Advisory Committee of the Partnership
to Cut Hunger in Africa, December 18th in Washington, DC.
On January 25th, he will present a seminar at IFPRI in Washington
on "The Value of Quality Certification for Infant Foods",
from a paper co-authored with Diakalia Sanogo.
Bob Taylor will travel to Spearfish, SD on January 26th
to address the Nebraska, South Dakota Farm Bureau State
Convention on "How to farm with family and stay friends".
