Congratulations and Names in the News:

Marshall Martin participated in the August 1-2, 2001 meeting of the USDA Advisory Committee on Agricultural Biotechnology in Washington, DC. He was originally appointed by Secretary of Agriculture Dan Glickman, and recently reappointed by Secretary of Agriculture Ann Veneman.

Tom Hertel was been selected to participate in the 23rd Leadership Program on Japan, sponsored by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Sept. 2-8, 2001. In this capacity, he meet with leaders of business and industry in Japan, as well as presented a seminar at METI.

The ICEE held its Annual Awards for Excellence Program on September 21. Teachers, administrators, and community leaders were honored for their commitment to economic education. Superintendent of Public Instruction, Suellen Reed, addressed the audience on the importance of economic education. She also thanked the many program sponsors and supporters that have given so much to Indiana Council.

The second edition of Life, Love and Economics, the text/novel by Gavin Sinclair, Robert W. Taylor, Dee E. Cottrell and Larry DeBoer came off the press just in time for the fall semester. The first edition made the front page of the Wall Street Journal and was the basis of articles in Newsweek and The Chronicle of Higher Education. Improvements include great new chapters by Larry DeBoer and web sites substituting for data tables.

Ag Econ launches a new Study Abroad web site:

The start of the fall semester was marked by the introduction of a new destination on the world wide web. The site, designed by Associate Professor Gerald Shivery and department web specialist Matt Mooney, aims to promote and facilitate study abroad among Ag Econ undergraduates. The site includes basic information on study abroad, video clips from students who have recently studied abroad, and a ‘location finder' designed to help students locate study abroad programs that match their interests. The site, which is located at www.agecon.purdue.edu/study_abroad also contains special information for parents of study abroad students as well as information for individuals and institutions interested in sponsoring undergraduate study aborad.

Will Master's article "Climate and Scale in Economic Growth", in the current issue of the Journal of Economic Growth, has received media coverage in The New Scientist, the Times of London, the Toronto Star and others thanks to a press release from the Purdue News Service.

Travel, Speeches and Presented Papers

John M. Connor will addressed the First International Agricultural Trade and Policy Conference on "Multinationals in a Global Environment". The conference will be held Oct. 31-Nov. 2 in Gainesville, FL.

Marshall A. Martin presented an invited lecture on trends in technological change and world agriculture to the Argentine Association of Agricultural Experimention Consortium, Mar del Plata, Argentina, September 11, 2001.

Robert Taylor will give a presentation on how to farm together with family and still be friends to the following groups: Florida Farm Bureau, Annual Meeting held October 27th; the Nevada Farm Bureau Young Farmers and Ranchers on November 10th; and the South Dakota Young Farmers and Ranchers on January 26th.
