Congratulations and Names in the News:

The Indiana Council for Economic Education (ICEE) sponsored its second Economics Challenge Competition on April 23. Twenty-two high school teams competed at three regional sites. Students competed on their knowledge of economics in two divisions: Theory and Real Life. The Theory Division winner was Carmel High School, in Carmel, Indiana. The winning Real Life team was from Elkhart Memorial High School in Elkhart, Indiana. Both teams will advance to the regional competition in Chicago on May 7. Sponsors, in addition to the ICEE, were the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, the Indiana Humanities Council, and the Goldman Sachs Foundation.

On June 16th, Otto Doering was part of a briefing for the State Department on Foot and Mouth Disease.

Otto Doering preceded President Bush to explain the energy situation to the California Dairy Processor on June 23rd.

John Connor will be a participant in "L'Institute", a two-week workshop (July 9-July 20, 2001) of scholars from Europe and North America sponsored by the Universities of Wisconsin, Birmingham, and Ferrara (http://linstitute.economia.unife.it). The topic this year is Urban and Regional Prosperity in a Globalized Economy.

Thomas Hertel participated in a workshop with officials from the World Bank as well as the Chinese government May 6-8 in Beijing. The goal of this project is to assess the impact of China's WTO accession on poverty. Professor Hertel will be co-authoring a chapter in the resulting book on this topic.

Travel, Speeches and Presented Papers

Harlan Day traveled to Dubrovnik, Croatia, in May to attend a conference of economic educators from Eastern and Central Europe who have taken part in the programs of the National Council on Economic Education (NCEE) during the past 5 years. These NCEE programs have helped countries prepare for the transition from communist to market economies by training high school and elementary teachers in economic content and pedagogy.

Wally Tyner presented a paper entitled, "Agricultural Policy Analysis Needed to Ensure that the Economic Policy Set is Aligned with the Climatic Reality" at the annual conference of the Moroccan Association of Agricultural Economics, May 24-25, in Rabat, Morocco.

Gerald A. Harrison presented lectures on "History of Property Rights" and "Conservation Easements: the Concept, Taxes and the Deed" at the Regional American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraiser's Continuing Education Seminar on Appraising Conservation Easements at Collinsville, Illinois, near St. Louis. Harrison worked with national appraisal instructor Art Clapp and four other specialists dealing with conservation easements for the two-day program. Prof. Harrison is an Extension Economist and member of the Indiana Bar working as a specialist on the Purdue Land Use Team.
