Center for Food and Agricultural Business

The Center for Agricultural Business recently hosted 25 executives and high level government officials from the seed sector of Poland for a two-week program entitled, The Advanced Management Training Program and US Seed Industry Tour. The purpose of this custom-designed program was to improve the managerial expertise of seed company managers of Poland.

The program, conducted November 4-14, 2000, included 3 days of on-campus instruction plus several days of field visits to ten seed companies headquartered in the Midwest. Three instructors from the AGEC dept had teaching roles: Prof. Dave Downey taught Advanced Marketing; Prof. Tim Baker led the group in Advanced Finance; and Prof Jay Akridge presented the segments on Advanced Strategy.

In addition, Prof. Joan Fulton and Visiting Professor Ken Harling accompanied the group on field visits throughout Indiana and Illinois and facilitated discussions with 10 seed companies. During the visits, management challenges were shared, offering an opportunity to link the concepts learned in the coursework to the practical application of business strategies and solutions. To round out the program, visits were made to family farms, and social activities were planned to introduce the Polish seed group to an American way of life. The program was highly rated by all participants.

This program is the fourth in a series of management development programs that was created for the seed sector of Poland, beginning in 1998. Over time, theprogram has targeted three integral components of the sector, 1) university curricula of two agricultural universities in Poland, 2) professional managers and leaders in the seed companies of Poland, and 30 officials from the Ministry of Agriculture.

This program was funded primarily with financial support from the Polish participants and the Polish Seed Chamber. Additional funding support was provided by the American Seed Trade Association through the United States Department of Agriculture.
