A4 Faculty of Veterinary Science Support Program

Dr. David Hodgson from Kansas State University provides leadership for the A4 program Faculty of Veterinary Science assistance. Dr. Hodgson has had over 10 years experience in rural mixed animal veterinary practice. He has been involved in academic veterinary medicine for over 25 years and has been a faculty member at Kansas State University for 20 years. He is currently a specialist in veterinary anesthesiology at Kansas State.

The focus of the A4 program in veterinary science is capacity building in the small animal teaching clinic and course development with faculty members interested in improving course design, content and delivery.

Dr. Hodgson’s broad background and experiences has made him well qualified to assist in treatment of animals at the Kabul University Veterinary Clinic and to instruct students and staff in modern diagnosis, treatment and therapy of disease conditions in multiple species. His innovative ability to work with minimal equipment and devise ways of utilizing (limited) resources has served him well in upgrading the knowledge and skills of staff to enable them to be better teachers. He has a passion for teaching students and is continually inspired by the bright and inquisitive veterinary students at Kabul University.

Support from his colleagues at Kansas State University has resulted in donation of thousands of dollars of modern equipment, supplies and medications that are necessary to raise the standard of care for Afghan livestock and companion animals. They have donated dozens of current text and reference books for use at the clinic and at the Faculty of Veterinary Science Library. His involvement in academia has also provided him with the knowledge and resources to offer assistance to the Faculty of Veterinary Science in course and curriculum development. Special teaching methods used in the United States have been demonstrated to current staff members and Dr. Hodgson is available on an individual basis to help interested staff members modernize their course content and methods of teaching. Dr Hodgson was active in support of the A4 program for 6 months in 2007 and will provide assistance for 2 month blocks in 2008-2010.

Additionally Kansas State University secured support to fund DVM and MS degree studies for a junior Afghan veterinary faculty member. The Afghan faculty member is in completing the first year of his studies at Kansas State University.
