Purdue/USAID Afghan Merit Scholar Program
The Purdue/USAID Afghan Merit Scholar Program (AMS) is a Purdue/USAID partnership to provide master degree level education to junior faculty from Afghan agricultural faculties (colleges). AMS fellows are selected in an open, competitive process from applicants hired as or seeking university teaching positions at Afghan universities in some area of agriculture. The first AMS class includes junior Afghan faculty from 5 Afghan agricultural faculties: Kabul, Bamyan, Herat, Kandahar and Nangarhar universities.
AMS fellows’ academic programs include English language education (required for study in the U.S.), foundations classes in math and science, undergraduate courses, and applied-integrated outreach and research in addition to MS degree studies. While studying for MS degrees, each AMS fellow works with Purdue faculty members on teaching, outreach and research activities to learn practical skills that will equip them to assume leadership positions in teaching, course development, curriculum reform, and other critical areas related to building academic programs in Afghan agriculture faculties. AMS fellows also participate in a range of extra- and co-curricular activities to broaden their general education and to help Purdue University and community members gain an understanding of Afghans and current social, economic, and political issues in Afghanistan.
