Afghan Faculty Exchange Program

The Afghan Faculty Exchange Program (AFE) is a USDA funded program to bring mid-career Afghan agriculture faculty to the United States for professional improvement. While at Purdue Afghan faculty have focused on up-dating their core disciplinary background as applied to undergraduate education at their home institutions. Each AFE participant is paired with a Purdue mentor in his/her disciplinary area to work on course development and curriculum development. The AFE participants are engaged in a variety of extra- and co-curricular activities to learn about Purdue University programs and to gain a better understanding of the United States. AFE participants are also involved in extension and applied research activities while at Purdue.

AFE participants spend a week in Washington D.C. visiting the offices of the United States Department of Agriculture prior to reporting to Purdue University. While at USDA the AFE participants have an opportunity to meet with USDA officials to gain insight into the departments resources and programs, and how USDA link with the land-grant system to support American agriculture and consumers.

While at Purdue the AFE participants also had a week-long visit to another land-grant university. AFE participants visited Texas A&M, University of California at Davis, and Cornell.

Upon completion of their stay at Purdue the AFE participants return USAD in Washington for a closing workshop with faculty exchange visitors from other countries before returning home. Once back in Afghanistan the AFE participants work with Purdue A4 staff in Afghanistan to implement changes in their instruction programs.
