William T. Boehm - 1999

Cincinnati, Ohio
M.S. Agricultural Economics, 1972
Ph.D., Agricultural Economics, 1974
Vice President, Logistics, The Kroger Co.

William T. Boehm knows the ropes in academia, government, and industry.

Raised on a Wisconsin dairy farm, he earned his bachelor’s degree in 1970 from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, and came to West Lafayette where he received his master’s in 1972 and his doctorate in 1974.

He says he decided to come to Purdue on the strength of the Ag Econ faculty, and his best Purdue memories are of arguments in the coffee room. He remembers that grad students were expected to challenge the faculty, so they learned how to debate and express ideas.

Dr. Boehm began his professional career as Assistant Professor of Agricultural Economics at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, where he taught and researched food marketing issues, including food economics, food policy, and dairy marketing.

Dr. Boehm’s next career step took him to Washington, D.C., to the United States Department of Agriculture as Branch Chief of Food Economics. Later he served as the Senior Staff Economist with the President’s Council of Economic Advisors. He also wrote a food policy textbook that is used extensively throughout the United States.

In 1981, he left the public sector to work for The Kroger Company, the largest retail food company in the United States. His positions at Kroger have included Director of Economic Research, Vice President of Corporate Planning and Research, Vice President of Grocery Procurement, and currently, Vice President of Logistics, where he is responsible for the development and implementation of strategies to improve the efficiency of Kroger’s distribution system.

For his outstanding performance in the field of Agricultural Economics, the Purdue School of Agriculture is proud to present the Distinguished Agricultural Alumnus Award to William T. Boehm.

“ I decided on Purdue on the strength of the faculty and the history of the Ag Econ Department. There were all these big names like Earl Butz, Don Paarlberg, and Charlie French, and if you knew anything about Ag Econ, you knew that these guys were like the winners of the Super Bowl. Being recruited to join a team that had won the Super Bowl was pretty exciting.”
