Walter J. Armbruster - 1999
Oak Brook, Illinois
B.S., Agricultural Economics, 1962
M.S., Agricultural Economics, 1964
Managing Director, Farm Foundation
Walter J. Armbruster’s early career path included two degrees from Purdue
and work with the United States Department of Agriculture. These experiences
gave him an understanding of both government and university systems and the
way they relate to the economics and policies of agriculture and agribusiness.
His experience with the U.S. government included service with the USDA as
Staff Economist advising the administrator of the Agricultural Marketing Service.
Earlier, he served as an Agricultural Economist in the National Economic Analysis
Division of the Economic Research Service, where he evaluated federal marketing
order programs, farm bargaining, contract pricing for processing commodities,
and related market regulation and monitoring activities.
Today in his work at the Farm Foundation, Dr. Armbruster uses his understanding
of systems to bring people together to explore issues affecting the well-being
of agriculture and rural people. His responsibilities include allocating funds
to increase the impact of research and education programs, developing new areas
of endeavor, and identifying emerging policy issues. He actively participates
as a catalyst and stimulator of ideas in working sessions and seminars sponsored
by the Farm Foundation.
He is also a prolific author, having written or served as editor n a number
of marketing research, education, and policy publications. One of his major
talents in this area is his ability to pull together and organize materials
from diverse sources into easily understandable report form.
For his outstanding performance in the field of Agricultural Economics, the
Purdue School of Agriculture is proud to present the Distinguished Agricultural
Alumnus Award to Walter J. Armbruster.

“
The most rewarding thing about my work is the opportunity to interact with
national and international agricultural leaders in both public and private
sectors. The Farm Foundation serves as a catalyst, bringing a lot of people
together to talk about various topics. I meet a lot of interesting people that
way.”
