DEBORAH JOHNSON BROWN (1945-1993)
Professor Brown's foremost concern was students. She devoted a large portion
of her time to assisting students in their research projects and their overall
development. She taught AGEC 602, Preparation and Procedures for Policy Analysis,
for over a decade and became a vital link in hundreds of graduate student projects.
In 1983, she designed and began teaching the Department's first econometrics
course for undergraduates. This course greatly strengthened the undergraduate
program, especially for those students contemplating graduate education. In
1990, she assumed responsibility for the Honors Program in Agricultural Economics
and spent hundreds of hours assisting her Honors students with their special
projects and their overall plans of study. "Deb" always tried to
communicate the excitement of the research process and of scientific discovery
to students while holding them to high quality standards. Her enthusiasm and
optimism often proved to be infectious and students left her office or her
classroom renewed and invigorated. She will be missed, not only by those of
us who knew her but also by generations of students who will not have the opportunity
to learn from one of the great teachers who demanded excellence from her students
and from herself.
Dr. Brown obtained a B.A. in Economics from George Washington University,
an A.A. in Nursing from Purdue University and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Economics
from
Purdue University.
