Professor Binkley has worked on a wide range of issues, most relating to commodity and food markets. His recent research has focused on the retail sector, food away from home, and consumer demand for nutrition. He has published in a variety of journals, ranging from the American Journal of Agricultural Economics and the Review of Economics and Statistics to the Journal of the American Statistical Association and the International Journal of Obesity . In 1994 he and graduate student Martin Benirschka won the American Journal of Agricultural Economics best article award for their paper "Optimal Storage and Marketing Over Space and Time."
