Welcome to the Indiana Local Government Information Page

Local government is a big, complex topic, but there is hardly another more important to people's lives. Education of children, protection from crime and fire, paving of streets, collection of trash--all and more are functions of local government. In our democracy the public has the ultimate say about the delivery of these services. Yet local government organization, budgets, and revenue sources are so complex that many people lack the understanding needed to participate in public meetings, advocate positions, or even decide for whom or what to vote.

This Indiana Local Government Information Page tries to help. Here you will find information about Indiana local government. There are one-screen pages that outline some of the important issues facing Indiana today, called "Hot Topics," there are Reference documents like court decisions and scholarly essays, there is a mountain of Data for the number crunchers, there is a Glossary for quick definitions. The Topics page provides a curriculum that will help people learn about Indiana local government in as little or as much depth as they desire.  And if you don't find what you want here, there is a Links page to help you find what you want elsewhere.

This website is under construction, but I hope there is already enough here to be useful, and to indicate what more is to come. --Larry DeBoer, Professor of Agricultural Economics, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana 47907. Email: deboer@agecon.purdue.edu.
