Here is the table of motor vehicle excise tax rates, in effect since the tax cut of 1996.  The 17 categories labeled with Roman numerals and dollar ranges show the price of the vehicle when new.  Rows 1 through 10 show the age of the vehicle.  For example, a vehicle costing $16,000 when new would be in class XI.  If it is three years old in 2001 the excise tax would be $156.
