In today’s economic environment prices can be quite volatile. This has been especially true in the case of fertilizer prices. The recent increase in fertilizer price volatility has placed increased importance on the timing of fertilizer purchases. Commonly, producers choose to purchase and apply fertilizer in the fall rather than spring as a price management strategy. Here we examine this strategy, comparing fall to spring prices for common fertilizers using historic Indiana retail prices and price data from the USDA.
